Word 109 – fr7ân فرحان

Posted by: SimplyMoroccan   in Adjectives, Darija Vocabulary

Fr7ân فرحان means happy, joyful,… It comes from the MSA verb fari7a فرح which is fr7 in Darija. Fr7âna فرحانة is the feminine form of the adjective, and fr7ânîn فرحانين is the plural form.

Some often wonder: what is happiness? Or: am I happy? And some are just plain happy… Like: The Happy Face Spider.

Credit: National Geography

Like the lizards I talked about before, this spider (rtîla)is real and the photo is not tricked. Wait until you know the real name of the Happy Face Spider in Hawaiian, it’s nananana makakiʻi. No kiddin’! This spider is a nananana! (Reminds of the mana-mana video). Its scientific name is Theridion grallator.
Scientists believe that this spider has the happy face pattern for it to stop birds from eating it. You can see in the photos below that patterns vary slightly. Some faces seem to have a big nose, and others seem to have some teeth.
