Word 79 – lmmâ3n

Mmâ3n ????? include all kitchen utensils. In classical Arabic, when you talk about washing the dishes, it’s exactly like in English, we use the word: aTbâq ?????, which makes you think that all you’ll have to wash are “dishes”, and no other utensils are included.

The word mmâ3n seems to come from classical Arabic though, mawâ3în ??????.

In every Moroccan house (contradict me if you can), lmmâ3n are an issue:
Who has to wash the dishes today?
Yesterday that was my turn, we spent the day at my aunt’s, it’s my super duper great luck and no one can make me wash them today!
And hey, why do I have to do everything in this house? If I am going to wash the dishes, can someone bother clear the table?

And of course, boys are never part of chores diving in Moroccan houses. I rarely heard about young boys helping their mom with house chores, and that’s only when they have no sister. If the family is of say 5 brothers and 1 sister, no one will wash the dishes but the poor girl.

By the way, lmmâ3n are just one part of the chores, the rest will be more vocabulary entries for you ;-) .

Word 78 – garro

Garro ????? is a cigarette. It sounds nothing like sîjârah ?????? in classical Arabic, so it seems that garro comes from cigarette. The definite form of garro, is lgarro.

Please note that although I am transcripting garro as ?????, it’s a G sound there. I prefer to use plain Arabic letters, than using loan letters, such as ? for G.

Being bothered by someone smoking in a public place, and who stands too close to you to make you feel that you’re smoking with them, is something that happened to me – again – this morning. (Well, it happens too often). Mind you, smokers do not bother to get away from people while enjoying their cigarettes. The worst is when you get in a taxi that got the sign “please do not smoke”, with a driver who smokes keeping his hand outside the window. But hello, it all comes inside!

Anyways, the positive thing coming out of this is that it reminded me of that Moroccan joke (yes, again!) that I am going to tell you about today. I am having a high degree of inspiration I terms of jokes lately, apparently.

Jîb ??? is pocket. In classical Arabic it’s the same word: jayb ???

jîb: Undefined masculine singular.
jjîb: Defined masculine singular.
jyôb: Undefined masculine plural.
jjyôb: Defined masculine plural.
