Word 115 – Danone دانون

Danone: masculine word… What? That’s not a vocabulary entry? Are you sure?

In Morocco, there is no such word as “yugurt” in Darija. Seriosly! Danone had monopolized the market for so long, that for Moroccans yugurt equals Danone . Currently, with other brands in the market, people still say to môl l7anôt (the grocer): “3Tînî 3âfâk wâ7d danone dyâl ljawda” –

عطيني عافاك واحد دانون ديال الجودة [Give me please one "danone" of "Jawda"], for example. Jawda being another yugurt brand by Copag.

The same thing applies to Tide and Omo (detergents). People would use both interchangably, and even grocers would give you Tide even if you asked for Omo and vice versa. “3Tînî wâ7d Tide dyâl Omo” -

عطيني عافاك واحد تيد ديال أومو [Give me please one "Tide" of "Omo"], would people say.

Interesting topic. I remember thinking that it was wierd that they called the yogurt Dannon even when it wasn’t Dannon. Are there a lot of other products that Moroccans do this with or are those the main one?

I mentioned also Tide and Omo for detergents.
And let me get you here a summary of other products mentioned in the French blog:
- Clogate for toothpaste
- Gilette for shavers.
- Frigidaire for fridges
- Bimo for cookies
- Kleenex for tissues

In English, Kleenex is also sometimes used for tissue,
and hoover for vacuum cleaner (in Br. Eng., though not in Aus. Eng. )

@Bo2ala diyal aboya:
Sorry for the late response :) .
I didn’t know about kleenex, but a friend told me -on the French blog – about a similar thing in Canada.

Wikipedia lists some really surprising ones (generic trademarks) which I didn’t think of as trademarks: Aspirin, Escalator, Linoleum and Zipper! And it says that a company can lose it’s right to the trademark if it becomes generic so I guess you can have too much of a good thing in advertising / product success.
