Today’s word is a dangerous one! :-p

Môs ??? is knife, that’s sikkîn ???? in classical Arabic.

môs : Undefined masculine singular.
lmôs : Defined masculine singular.
mwâs : Undefined masculine plural.
lmwâs : Defined masculine plural.

Short conversation:

In Darija:

- Farid: Malika, wâ Mailka!

- Malika: Hani jayya.

- Farid: Jibi liyya m3âk wâ7d lmôs 3âfâk.

- Malika: Ash ghadi ddir bih?

- Farid: Ghadi nqtl râsi! Ash ghadi ndir bih f nadark? Ghir bghit nqt3 bih hâd llimôna.

In English:

- Farid: Malika, Mailka!

- Malika: Coming.

- Farid: Bring me a knife with you please.

- Malika: What for?

- Farid: To kill myself! What would I do with it in your opinion? I just want to cu this orange.

By the way can I ask is classical Arabic so mcuh different than Moroccan? Or only some differences about details like US and UK English?

Moroccan Arabic is indeed different than classical Arabic. Sometimes it’s just about the way the word is prunounced, sometimes it’s about whole different words, as you can see for sikkîn and môs. But that’s not an excuse for other Arabic speaking people for not understanding our dialect. :)

Thanks for this blog. I am trying to learn darija having family in Morocco and visiting regularly.

I remember running around shops in Zagora once, asking the mul l 7anut “3ndkum chi mousse à raser”.

They predictably pointed me to the razors everytime.

In any case, it seems shaving cream doesnt really exist in large swathes of North Africa. Thats when I realized for the first time that its no harder shaving with soap and warm water.
