Word 88 – bnîn

Today’s word is suggested by a reader of this blog, Cheryl. The word is Bnîn ????, and it means delicious! The feminine form of this adjective is bnîna.

When a delicious meal is served, you say in Moroccan: mmmm, had sh-shi bnîn!

In classical Arabic: hâdha ladhîdh! – ??? ????!
In English: Yummy, this is delicious!

Not all languages have an equivalent for “yummy”, but here is this useful sentence in different languages:

In French: Miam miam, c’est délicieux!
In Berber: Immîm lkhîr ad!
In Slovenian: Njami, to je slastno!
In Urdu: Mazaydaar hai
In German: Das ist lecker!
In Chinese: Mei wei ke kou! : ????
In Filipino: Ang sarap nito!
In Italian: E buonissimo!
In Portuguese : Está delicioso !
In Turkish: Vay be bu cok lezzetli!
In Georgian: Pena germeli ari !
In Finnish: Nam, tämä on herkullista !
In Swedish: Det är läckert!
In Polish: Pyszne!
In Romanian: E delicious!
In Russian: Eto ochen’ vkusnoe! – ??? ????? ???????
In Japanese: ?-,????????
In Spanish : Está delicioso!

Oh! I didn’t notice that the Japanese and Chinese versions aren’t viewed correctly!

“finom” is neutral
by the way would you please tell me the meaning of the following words (ila jaat 3ala xaTrk :D )

7bb lmlôk = Cherry. It’s Karaz in MSA.
Sh-hdiyya = It’s a fruit, gotta make sure about its name. Will get back to you on this one.
Tôt = Strawberry. But tôt is rather in MSA, we would call it fraise like in French.
Qôq = globe artichoke
Snâyf — No idea. Have you got it in a sentence? A context?
Ssofitma = Comes from the French word “sous vêtements”, which means underwear. But in Morocco a sofitma is a sport jacket.
Jllaba = Moroccan traditional dress. It has masucline versions, and feminine ones. Here is one for women:

[They normally are longer than that]

Family is lmafila, or l3a2ila in Darija.

oh ?ukran :)
the words come from a darija language book where the pictures are rather hazy (at least in my copy) and they somehow forgot to give the english equivalents. so ?nayf must be a body part but i just can’t figure it out.
in the book they mention both toot and friiz but they somehow treat them as separate fruits :O

Oh! Your shukran! So you actually meant shnayf? Big chances that this might mean lips. They are are qnanf too. Check the hazy image and see if it matches!
Tôt must be then some kind of strawberry, what we’d call in MSA: attôt albarri. [Not sure]

bnin in Serbian would go like this:
mmmmm sto je dobro. ovo je izvrsno.

Here I got another translation in Dutch (Belgian)

mmmm, het is heerlijk ! (standard)
or
mmmm, ‘t is heerlijk ! (common)
or
you could say like the germans:
mmm, het is lekker !
(but “lekker” would be more like “ldid” in darija, I think )
“heerlijk” (delicious) is a stronger word than “lekker” (tastefull)
if I got it right ;-) ))
